Hazmat Hotline for Amazon Dangerous Goods FBA
Shipping hazardous materials through Amazon FBA requires more than just a 24/7 emergency phone number. This guide walks you through every compliance requirement — and shows you how to simplify the entire process without slowing down your business.
Key Terms You Need to Know
Products that can pose a risk to health, safety, or the environment if shipped incorrectly. Common examples include perfumes, aerosols, cleaning products, and items containing batteries.
The most important document for hazmat compliance. It details what's in the product, how dangerous it is, and what to do in an emergency. Required by Amazon before FBA approval.
Every hazmat product is assigned a class (e.g. flammable, corrosive, toxic) based on international standards enforced through 49 CFR in the US. Correct classification drives everything else.
A 24/7 hotline required on all SDS and shipping papers under DOT 49 CFR 172.604. Must be staffed by trained specialists who can provide immediate guidance during a hazmat incident.
Amazon only accepts hazmat under Limited Quantity rules — meaning each unit must stay within DOT and IATA-defined size and weight limits. This does not limit how many units you can send overall.
Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations. The US law that makes international hazmat transport standards legally enforceable, covering packaging, labeling, documentation, and emergency response.

FBA Hazmat Compliance Checklist
Approval is required before sending any hazmat inventory to FBA. In the US, new sellers may face a waiting list — plan ahead before committing to a launch timeline.
Determine whether your product is considered hazmat and eligible for FBA. Many everyday items — perfumes, sprays, cleaning products, battery-powered goods — are classified as hazmat without sellers realizing it. Identify the correct UN number, hazard class, and packing group if applicable.
Get the SDS from your manufacturer or use a professional SDS authoring service. It must include all 16 standard sections, match your product listing, and have been created or updated within the past five years. If your product qualifies (e.g. certain batteries), an exemption sheet may be accepted instead.
Required in Section 1 of your SDS under OSHA HCS and DOT 49 CFR 172.604. Must be active before your SDS is finalized and before any hazmat shipment is sent to an Amazon fulfillment center. Most companies use a dedicated provider to ensure 24/7 availability.
Anyone involved in handling, classifying, packaging, or shipping hazmat must complete training under 49 CFR. This includes general awareness, function-specific, safety, and security training. Must be refreshed every 3 years — Amazon also requires training certificates for employees who handle dangerous goods.
Confirm each unit complies with LQ rules per the latest IATA DGR guide. Also check Amazon's internal hazmat storage and inbound shipment limits, which vary by product type and fulfillment center. These limits affect how many units you can send at one time.
Package must pass Amazon's 3-foot drop test. All hazmat liquids must be bagged with a spill-proof bag or enclosed in heat shrink wrap. Fragile containers require bubble wrap or boxing. The item barcode must be scannable on the outside of the packaging. Non-compliant packaging may be refused, returned, or repackaged at your expense.
All required labels must be correctly applied: GHS/DOT hazmat labels, Limited Quantity label, Arrow labels for liquid shipments, transport markings where applicable, and Amazon FBA shipment labels. Incorrect or missing labels are one of the most common reasons for shipment rejection.
Confirm your carrier is authorized to transport hazardous materials and meets Amazon's inbound shipping requirements. Not all carriers accept dangerous goods — using an unauthorized carrier can result in shipment refusal at the fulfillment center.
Your shipment must include compliant shipping papers with correct product classification, packaging details, and a valid 24/7 emergency phone number. This is required under 49 CFR 172.604 and ensures proper handling and immediate support in case of an incident.
- PHMSA civil fines or criminal penalties under 49 CFR for improper packaging, labeling, or documentation.
- Amazon may dispose of your inventory at your expense if documentation is not provided within their required timeframe.
- Listings can be removed or deactivated until compliance is verified — repeated violations may result in account suspension.
- Products can be permanently flagged, making them impossible to sell through FBA in the future.
